Effects of Diurnal Variations of Outgoing Longwave Radiation Over the Tropical Oceans

چکیده
Several current problems in atmospheric radiation over the tropical oceans may have at least partial solutions as effects of diurnal variations of outgoing longwave radiation (OLR). At issue are explanations for the following: a) excessively large amplitudes (in relation to theory) of the diurnal thermal tides over the tropical oceans (Braswell and Lindzen 1998); b) reported observations of excessively large direct atmospheric absorption of incident broadband solar radiation, which conflict with prior work and concurrent, collocated narrowband measurements centered in the visible spectrum (Cess et al. 1998); and c) the observed morning intensity maximum of the deepest, most intense tropical convective systems (Hall and Vonder Haar 1999; Gray and Jacobson 1977). The present lack of diurnally resolved broadband satellite OLR observations of sufficient accuracy and temporal resolution has been a restraint on our approach to these issues. Nevertheless, beginning with the morning maxim of intense tropical convection, we discuss each of these problems and show evidence of common links to OLR-related processes.

Periodicity of Downward Longwave Radiation at an Equatorial Location
A good understanding of the diverse mechanisms in the atmosphere is required in modelling the climate. In this study, the diurnal and seasonal patterns of all-sky downward longwave radiation (DLR) at Ilorin (8o 32l N, 4o 34l E), Nigeria were investigated alongside relative humidity (RH) and temperature. The average diurnal pattern of DLR gives an arc that begins by increasing gradually with som...

[1] We analyze the seasonal variations of Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) accompanying the variations in sea surface temperature (SST) from satellite observations and model simulations, focusing on the tropical oceans where the two quantities are strikingly anti-correlated. A spectral perspective of this ‘‘super-greenhouse effect’’ is provided, which demonstrates the roles of water vapor line...
متن کاملThe Sensitivity of the Tropical Hydrological Cycle to ENSO
Satellite observations of temperature, water vapor, precipitation and longwave radiation are used to characterize the variation of the tropical hydrologic and energy budgets associated with the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). As the tropical oceans warm during an El Niño event, the precipitation intensity, water vapor mass, and temperature of the tropical atmosphere are observed to increas...
متن کاملQuantification of the source of errors in AM2 simulated tropical clear-sky outgoing longwave radiation
[1] The global and tropical means of clear-sky outgoing longwave radiation (hereinafter OLRc) simulated by the new GFDL atmospheric general circulation model, AM2, tend to be systematically lower than ERBE observations by about 4 W m , even though the AM2 total-sky radiation budget is tuned to be consistent with these observations. Here we quantify the source of errors in AM2-simulated OLRc ove...

[1] We first present an algorithm for deriving cloudy sky outgoing spectral flux through the entire longwave spectrum from the collocated Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and Cloud and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) measurements over the tropical oceans. The algorithm is similar to the one described in part 1 of this series of studies: spectral angular dependent models are develop...
